SESAC
Society of European Stage Authors and Composers
Invite-only; the only for-profit US PRO.
About SESAC
SESAC is the smallest of the three traditional US Performance Rights Organizations. Despite its name referencing European origins, SESAC has been a US-based PRO since its founding in 1930 and represents American and international songwriters.
Unlike ASCAP and BMI, SESAC operates on an invitation-only basis. Songwriters cannot simply sign up β they must be invited or successfully apply through a selective review process. This curated approach means a smaller but closely managed roster.
SESAC was acquired by the Blackstone Group in 2017 and operates as a for-profit company. It represents notable songwriters across gospel, Christian, Latin, jazz, Americana, and mainstream pop genres. In 2021, SESAC also acquired the Harry Fox Agency (HFA), expanding into mechanical royalty administration.
How SESAC works
Invitation or Application
SESAC reviews potential members based on catalog strength, commercial activity, and genre fit. Writers can inquire about membership, but acceptance is not guaranteed.
Works Are Registered
Accepted members register their compositions through SESAC's online system with full metadata, splits, and publisher information.
SESAC Licenses and Monitors
SESAC uses proprietary monitoring technology and data partnerships to track performances across broadcast, digital, and live platforms.
Personalized Service
Due to its smaller roster, SESAC offers more personalized attention β including dedicated A&R relationships and creative support for members.
Why SESAC matters for songwriters
United States is served by SESAC for performance rights organization royalties. Without direct registration, international songwriters rely on reciprocal agreements β which typically add 12β24 months of delay before royalties reach you.
Frequently asked questions about SESAC
How do I get invited to SESAC?
SESAC scouts songwriters through industry activity, referrals, and direct inquiries. If you have a commercially active catalog, you can reach out to SESAC's member relations team to express interest.
Is SESAC better than ASCAP or BMI?
It depends on your needs. SESAC offers more personalized service and potentially higher per-play rates, but it's selective. ASCAP and BMI are open to all songwriters. The "best" PRO varies by genre, career stage, and priorities.
Can I leave SESAC for another PRO?
Yes, but SESAC contracts are typically multi-year. You must wait until your contract term expires and provide proper notice before switching.
Does SESAC's ownership of HFA affect songwriters?
SESAC's acquisition of HFA (a major mechanical rights administrator) means they can potentially offer more comprehensive services. However, PRO performance royalties and HFA mechanical royalties remain separate services.
